I read the book more than a year ago, so honestly speaking I don’t remember the details very well. In any case though, this film could really have done better! The book itself isn’t terribly poignant or scary, but with the cinematic techniques of this day, it would definitely have been possible to recreate the atmosphere into something much more focused and enthralling. This 2008 rendition wasn’t very successful in that at all, in my opinion. The soundtrack and cinematography are far too plain.

Robert Stadlober was kind of cute as Lyshko, though. Why didn’t I see anyone like that in Austria?

The Lives of Others

“There was a Schindler. There was no Wiesler.” Says Dr Hubertus Knabe, the director of the Hohenschönhausen prison museum. He refused von Donnersmarck permission to film a scene of The Lives of Others at the site.

Honestly speaking, the film was really langweilig. I have no idea at all how it received such a high rating. I have nothing to say about this film, other than that I’m glad my beloved Bayern never became a part of East Germany.

What use is love only in thought?
When the time comes, you won’t know.

Love In Thoughts is a movie that explores the depth of love and volatility of thought. It is basically about a love “pentagon”. A character relationship map should come in handy here:

This film is based on an actual incident that occurred in 1927, Weimar Germany, where a student committed suicide after shooting his lover to death.

On a regular weekend, Günther and Paul forms a suicide club whose decree is that a member should end his life at the moment when he no longer feels any love, taking the one he most loved with him, as a revenge to love lost. With the intention to find the ultimate happiness, they invite a bunch of schoolmates to a dissipated party at a summer house in the suburbs. The film unfolds the short chronicle of agony and struggle among the lovers and the beloved that lead to the eventual tragedy.

I haven’t watched too many German films. Funny that all of the German films I’ve watched so far…
